Suspect Taken Into Custody After Hours-Long Standoff

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - An armed suspect with a deadly weapon who was barricaded early today in the unincorporated Athens area, just west of the Los Angeles city limits, has been taken into custody after a nearly-five hour standoff.  

The area was deemed safe and all neighborhood evacuees were allowed to return to their homes.  

Sheriff's Special Enforcement Bureau personnel responded at 11:50 p.m. Friday to the 11200 block of Van Buren Avenue, about one block north of Imperial Highway, to assist deputies from South Los Angeles Sheriff's Station with a barricaded assault with a deadly weapon suspect, said Deputy Brenda Serna of the Sheriff's Information Bureau.  

The suspect was arrested at approximately 4:30 a.m.  

There was no additional information available.
