Decreasing Lake Mead Water Level Reveals Body In Barrel

Lake Mead's decreasing water level has resulted in the appearance of something very disturbing: a barrel, with a body stuffed inside.

  • The body, discovered by a resident on Sunday, has now been identified as a murder victim who apparently died from a gunshot wound -- years ago, says Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Homicide Lieutenant Ray Spencer. "Detectives believe the victim was killed sometime in the mid ’70s to early ‘80s, based on clothing and footwear the victim was found with," Spencer says. The Clark County Coroner's Office is currently attempting to determine the victim's name.
  • The morbid discovery likely won't be the last, Spencer says.
"The lake has drained dramatically over the last 15 years," he notes. "It’s likely that we will find additional bodies that have been dumped in Lake Mead."

What will happen when U.S. sources of drinking water dry up?
