Meningococcal Disease Outbreak In Florida

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and officials with the Florida Department of Health have issued a warning about an outbreak of meningococcal disease in the state, primarily among gay and bisexual men.

  • The CDC said it can be a "very serious, often deadly" disease.
  • One of the most common types of meningococcal disease is meningitis, which is an infection of the lining of the brain.
  • Health officials are recommending vaccination as the best source of protection, including for college students.
  • The disease is often spread through direct contact such as kissing or sharing drinks.
  • Have you or a loved one ever had meningitis? What was it like?
