The family of legendary comedian Gilbert Gottfried has announced he has passed away at the age of 67.

In a statement released by the family on Tuesday afternoon, Gottfried's family said:

"We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Gilbert Gottfried after a long illness. In addition to being the most iconic voice in comedy, Gilbert was a wonderful husband, brother, friend and father to his two young children. Although today is a sad day for all of us, please keep laughing as loud as possible in Gilbert's honor."

It is currently unclear how and where Gottfried died, but in 2020 it was announced that he was dealing with heart issues.

Gottfried's rep Glenn Schwartz told TMZ that Gottfried passed away from a heart abnormality called Ventricular Tachycardia that comes from Myotonic Dystrophy type II.

Gottfried was a cast member of "Saturday Night Live" and would go on to portray characters in multiple movies, including "Aladdin" and "Beverly Hills Cop II".

Gottfried leaves behind his wife Dara and children Lily and Max.
