SANTA ANA (CNS) - An investigation is continuing today into the death of a suspect in Santa Ana police custody.

The man died at a hospital Saturday, one day after he was arrested for allegedly breaking windows and assaulting security guards at a Santa Ana hotel near John Wayne Airport.

Officers were called at 11:47 p.m. Friday to the La Quinta Inn and Suites by Wyndham Orange County Airport, at 2721 Hotel Terrace, just west of the Costa Mesa (55) Freeway, said Santa Ana police Sgt. Maria Lopez.

``Upon arrival, officers encountered a hostile and combative male with visible injuries to his hands and arms,'' Lopez said.

``While attempting to de-escalate and place the male into custody, the male engaged in a violent confrontation with the officers,'' she said. ``During their efforts to restrain the male, officers used force to place him into custody.''

Paramedics treated the injured man at the scene and took him to Orange County Global Medical Center where he was pronounced dead Saturday morning, Lopez said.

``Per Santa Ana Police Department policy, Santa Ana Homicide detectives, Santa Ana Internal Affairs Unit and the Orange County District Attorney's Office are conducting concurrent independent investigations into this incident,'' she said.

Anyone with information related to this case was asked to call Santa Ana police homicide detectives at  714-245-8309.
