ARCADIA (CNS) - Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees member Mike Fong is scheduled to be certified as the winner of the special election to fill the vacant 49th Assembly District seat Feb. 24, allowing him to be sworn in.
Fong was a landslide winner over Republican Burton Brink, receiving 68.13% of the vote to 31.87% for Brink, a retired Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department sergeant, according to semifinal results released Tuesday night by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk.
Fong had promised that if elected, he would ``work every day to house the unhoused, protect our environment, create economic prosperity and level the playing field through policies focused on equity and opportunity.''
Fong is also director of policy and government relations for the Los Angeles Department of Neighborhood Empowerment.
The special election was called by Gov. Gavin Newsom to fill the seat previously held by Democrat Edwin Chau of Arcadia, who was appointed by Newsom on Nov. 29 to be a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge.
The predominantly Democratic district consists of Alhambra, Arcadia, El Monte, Monterey Park, Rosemead, San Gabriel, San Marino, Temple City and portions of Montebello and South El Monte.
