Australia Officially Declares Koalas as an Endangered Species

The Australian government has officially declared that koalas are an endangered species in several territories.

Australian environment minister, Sussan Ley, says this largely comes after an estimated 60,000 koalas were killed or hurt in bushfires in 2019 and 2020.

Other factors in the decline go back farther than that.

Conservationists say koalas were under threat years ago due to loss of habitat from developers clearing forest land and disease.
