Florida has been invaded by band of marauders who have been scaring residents, vandalizing cars and even causing traffic backups!
But now, Miami-Dade County officials are striking back...
The mischievous invaders are peacocks, which are especially troublesome this time of year because it's mating season, wildlife experts say. Up until now, neither the government nor residents have been able to fight back against the oversized birds, thanks to a 20-year-old law that protects them.
But that changed this week when Miami-Dade County commissioners voted to repeal the law and hand over the peacocks' fate to individual cities and towns.
"Mating season is when we get the most complaints," says Commissioner Raquel Regalado. "They get very aggressive. They lay their eggs, they build their nests, they peck the cars."
But that's not to say all county commissioners were in favor of sealing the fowls' fate.
"In my district, we learn to live with these peacocks,” says Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins. "They almost become a part of the community. I know our residents lose it when anyone harms any of these peacocks."
