Scientists Develop Morphing 'Microbots' Based On Bone Growth

A robot skeleton? Scientists are developing a type of morphing 'microbot' that can take the shape of bones - or other objects.

  • The technology is inspired by the way actual bones grow and develop - with bits of soft tissue called 'fontanelles' that harden into bone, like with a baby's skull.
  • The same principle applies to the microbots, which begin as a soft gel before hardening into the shape needed.
  • The bots could be used to treat complex fractures, by injecting them with a syringe an letting them harden into artificial bone.
  • Do you think biotechnology like this will ever become commonplace? How would you feel about having robot bones?
