LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Days after a lackluster Golden Globe Awards ceremony that garnered little attention, nominations will be unveiled today for the 28th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, an honor highly coveted by performers because they are bestowed by fellow actors.
The SAG Awards are also traditionally a strong indicator of which performers will achieve success on Oscar night.
Rosario Dawson and Vanessa Hudgens will unveil the nominees in a 7 a.m. announcement streaming on Instagram Live, on the SAG Awards page (@sagawards) and on Hudgens' page (@vanessahudgens).
SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher will get the ball rolling at 6:50 a.m., giving a short introduction. SAG Awards Committee members Jason George and Elizabeth McLaughlin will then announce the stunt ensemble nominees before turning the presentation over to Dawson and Hudgens.
Will Smith is a strong contender to land a nod for best actor for his performance as the father of Venus and Serena Williams in ``King Richard.'' Other performers in the running include Andrew Garfield for ``tick, tick...Boom!,'' Peter Dinklage for ``Cyrano'' and Benedict Cumberbatch for ``The Power of the Dog.''
Nicole Kidman is a likely nominee for best actress for her portrayal of Lucille Ball in ``Being the Ricardos,'' with Kristen Stewart a strong contender for ``Spencer,'' Lady Gaga for ``House of Gucci'' and Olivia Colman for ``The Lost Daughter.''
For outstanding ensemble cast -- the SAG Award equivalent of the Oscars' best picture -- ``Power of the Dog'' and ``Belfast'' are strong favorites to score nods, with ``King Richard,'' ``West Side Story,'' ``Don't Look Up'' and ``CODA'' also among the possible nominees.
The SAG Awards also honor television performances, with ``The Handmaid's Tale,'' ``Squid Game,'' ``This is Us,'' ``Succession,'' ``The Morning Show'' and ``Pose'' all among the likely nominees for outstanding ensemble cast in a drama series.
For comedy series, strong contenders for ensemble cast nominations include ``Ted Lasso,'' ``Only Murders in the Building,'' ``Hacks'' and ``The Great.''
The SAG Awards will be Feb. 27 at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. Helen Mirren will receive a lifetime achievement award during the event.
