Hero LA Firefighter and Father Jonathan Flagler Dies Fighting Blaze

In what officials are calling "sad, tragic day," a 21-year firefighting veteran and father of two has died while battling a blaze in Los Angeles County.

  • The incident happened early Thursday morning in a Rancho Palos Verdes home, where a fire had broken out in the attic, according to Interim Chief Anthony Marrone. Firefighter Jonathan Flagler was trying to save the home's residents when he became overcome by smoke, Marron notes.
"He put out a mayday for assistance from other firefighters," Marrone says. "They were able to locate him and rescue him." Unfortunately, the rescue didn't come soon enough. Flagler died after being transported to a local hospital, the LAFD reports.
  • County Supervisor Janice Hahn paid tribute to Flagler in a press conference late Thursday.
"This is devastating and my prayers are with his wife and two young sons as well as his friends and colleagues in the Fire Department and everyone that knew and loved him," she said. "His bravery and sacrifice will not be forgotten."

Thank you for your service! RIP
