After being forced to sit in their cars for more than 24 hours in freezing weather, hundreds of Virginia motorists have returned home after workers cleared the snow and disabled vehicles that left them stranded on Interstate 95, officials say.
- "I-95 is open after being closed for emergency response for most of the day," reads a tweet posted at 9:30 p.m. EST Tuesday by the Virginia Department of Transportation. "All disabled vehicles have been removed from the interstate."
- For many of the drivers, the announcement signaled the end of a nightmare that lasted for more than a day after heavy snowfall resulted in a number of spin outs and crashes that made the 50-mile stretch of roadway impassable. Among the stuck motorists was Virginia Senator Tim Kaine, who spent a staggering 27 hours in his vehicle after leaving home for what was supposed to be a two-hour journey.
