CLAREMONT (CNS) - A Claremont woman killed her 18-month-old daughter and then herself in their apartment, police said today.

Officers went to the 1400 block of Morton Circle about 7 p.m. Tuesday “for a welfare check on a mother and her child,'' police said in a statement.

“The mother and child had not been seen or heard from for the past few days,'' police said. “Officers arrived at the apartment and attempted contact by knocking on the front door, but there was no answer. Based on the circumstances, officers entered the apartment to check on the occupant's welfare.''

Once inside, the officers found the 33-year-old woman and her daughter unresponsive, police said. Paramedics pronounced the pair dead at the scene. Information was not immediately available on their identities.

“Based on the preliminary investigation, it appears that the mother killed the child and then committed suicide,'' police said.

“The weapon used during the incident was a knife, and it was recovered at the scene,'' police said. “There were no signs of forced entry into the apartment and there does not appear to be any outstanding suspects related to the incident.''

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call detectives at 909-399-5420.
