Puerto Rico Declares An Emergency Over Its Power Supply

Puerto Rico has declared a state of emergency due to the status of the territory's power.

  • Outages have been experienced by hundreds of thousands in recent weeks, reportedly due to mechanical issues.
  • Dánica Coto of the Associated Press told NPR that many depend on power for health-related reasons, including dealing with Covid-19.
  • Coto also said "...Puerto Rico has a high number of diabetics, a high number of asthmatics. You know, so you have people who depend on oxygen, including COVID patients, and people who also use dialysis."
  • It is also suspected that mismanagement from the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority could be to blame.
