POMONA (CNS)- A 43-year-old man and 36-year-old woman, both from Pomona, are in police custody today and charged with a variety of crimes.

Alfredo “Slugger'' Espinoza was arrested for possession of a controlled substance with a firearm and being a felon in possession of a firearm, and Martha Villa was arrested on a warrant for a U.S. probation violation, said Pomona Police Department Sgt. Mark Medellin. Both were booked at the Pomona Jail.

Pomona police officers stopped a vehicle with expired rear registration license plates at 9:39 p.m. Tuesday near Holt Avenue and Hamilton Boulevard, police said.

Espinoza, who police recognized from previous encounters and who they say is a documented gang member from a neighboring city, was driving and Villa was in the passenger seat. During the traffic stop Espinoza admitted to being in possession of illegal narcotics and a subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a hidden compartment, where they found a loaded and unregistered firearm, Medellin said.

Officers then conducted a wants/warrants check on the identification that Villa provided and learned she was wanted on a U.S. probation violation.

Anyone with information regarding this arrest is asked to contact the Pomona Police Department at 909-620-2085. Anonymous tips can be called in to Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or submitted online at lacrimestop-pers.org.
