National Guard Deployed To Plug Shortages As Vaccine Mandate Begins

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said she plans to sign an executive order to address any health care worker shortages as the state's health care vaccine mandate has taken effect.

  • All health care workers in the state were required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 by Monday (9/27).
  • Hochul said she's prepared to deploy medically trained National Guard officers and bring retired health care workers back into service.
  • At New York City's 11 public hospitals, about 5,000 out of 43,000 employees were not vaccinated as of Monday morning.
  • Officials said those unvaccinated employees will be put on unpaid leave but may return if they get vaccinated.
