ANAHEIM (CNS) - A man who barricaded himself inside an Anaheim apartment building was hospitalized in critical condition today after police ended the five-hour situation by entering and removing him.

Just after 11 p.m. Sunday, police deployed “chemical agents'' into the apartment in the Carlyle Courtyard, at 2630 W. Lincoln Ave., Anaheim police Sgt. Shane Carringer told City News Service.

A news videographer at the scene said firefighters administered CPR to the man.

The man was taken to a hospital for treatment and was listed in critical condition, Carringer said. He said he did not know how the man came to be in that state.

The drama began about 6:15 p.m. when a report came into the fire department about a fire and explosion at that apartment complex, Carringer said. When firefighters arrived, a resident said an armed man was in one of the units. Firefighters backed off and called police.

Carringer said he did not know why the man armed and barricaded himself.
