Two-Night Creative Arts Emmys Begin Today

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The first of three 2021 Creative Arts Emmys ceremonies will be held tonight at L.A. Live with the presentation of 36 awards in such technical categories as cinematography, costuming, hairstyling and makeup.

The Disney+ “Star Wars” series “The Mandalorian,” which shares the overall lead for the 73rd annual Primetime Emmy Awards with “The Crown” with 24 nominations, has 12 nominations for Saturday's ceremony -- four for outstanding single-camera picture editing for a drama series; and one each for outstanding cinematography for a single-camera series (half-hour); outstanding cinematography for a single-camera series (one hour); outstanding fantasy/science fiction costumes; outstanding period and/or character hairstyling; outstanding production design for a narrative period or fantasy program (one hour or more); outstanding prosthetic makeup; outstanding sound editing for a comedy or drama series (one hour); and outstanding sound mixing for a comedy or drama series (one hour).

The Disney+ blend of classic television and the Marvel Cinematic Universe “WandaVision” has eight nominations -- two in outstanding single-camera picture editing for a limited or anthology series or movie and one each for outstanding sound editing for a limited or anthology series, movie or special; outstanding sound mixing for a limited or anthology series or movie; outstanding fantasy/science fiction costumes; outstanding main title design; outstanding period and/or character hairstyling; and outstanding period and/or character makeup (non-prosthetic).

The Netflix drama about the life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II “The Crown” has seven nominations -- two for outstanding single-camera picture editing for a drama series and one each for outstanding cinematography for a single-camera series (one hour); outstanding period and/or character hairstyling; outstanding period costumes; outstanding production design for a narrative period or fantasy program (one hour or more); and outstanding sound mixing for a comedy or drama series (one hour).

Netflix's steamy eight-episode alternate history period drama “Bridgerton” has four nominations -- outstanding period and/or character hairstyling; outstanding cinematography for a single-camera series (one hour); outstanding period costumes; and outstanding production design for a narrative period or fantasy program (one hour or more.

The Oscars, Grammys and Golden Globe Awards ceremonies are among the nominees for outstanding production design for a variety special, along with “Friends: The Reunion” and “Stephen Colbert's Election Night 2020: Democracy's Last Stand Building Back America Great Again Better 2020.”

Two other Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies will be held Sunday, also at L.A. Live. The first will honor reality and nonfiction programming while scripted and variety programming will be honored at the second.

Awards in the top 27 categories in comedy, drama, competition, limited and anthology, variety talk and sketch series and the Governors Award will be presented at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards on Sept. 19.
