New York 1st-ever Flash Flood Emergency, Water Gushes into Subway

The National Weather Service announced a flash flood warning for New York and New Jersey on Wednesday night.

  • These warnings were the first two ever issued by the New York office of the National Weather Service.
  • The warnings came as New York's streets and subways were flooded due to remnants from Ida.
  • Flash flood warnings happen when heavy rain and flooding causes serious risks to human life.
  • As of Wednesday night, it was suggested that people avoid subways due to water entering stations and tracks.
  • By Thursday at least 12 people died in New York City, one in a car and 11 in flooded basement apartments - including a two-year-old boy.
  • In New Jersey 23 people were killed by Ida. 5 people in Pennsylvania, 1 in Maryland and 1 in Conneticut.
