UNIVERSAL CITY (CNS) - NBC4 and Telemundo 52 began their annual Clear The Shelters pet adoption and donation drive today.

It's the seventh year the stations have worked to raise awareness of pet adoptions from local rescues in Southern California. More than 70 shelters and nonprofit rescue organizations are participating, many offering month-long adoption discounts and incentives.

“The past year brought extraordinary challenges on our communities and pressure on local animal shelters was no exception,'' NBC4 President and general manager Steve Carlston said in a statement. “Thanks to the station's steadfast commitment to easing animal overpopulation in shelters and in neighborhoods throughout the Southland, Clear The Shelters continues to place tens of thousands of pets in forever homes.''

The campaign will run through Sept. 19.

Clear The Shelters will partner with Greater Good Charities to provide food, supplies and medical care to thousands of shelter animals via an online donation campaign. Additional partner iHeartDogs will again donate pet supplies to select shelters. Donations can be made at www.clearthesheltersfund.org.

Due to COVID-19, pet adoptions are taking place virtually with help from WeRescue.

NBC4 and Telemundo 52 will both run reports and stories on adoption efforts throughout the campaign. More information can be found at
