Program Will Erase Student Loans For People With Severe Disabilities

More than 300,000 Americans with severe disabilities will soon have their student loans wiped out.

  • The Total and Permanent Disability Discharge program will clear $5.8 billion in debt for 323,000 eligible borrowers.
  • The program actually dates back to 1965, but Education Secretary Miguel Cardona says many Americans don't even know they're eligible for it. Debt relief will now be offered automatically, allowing more Americans to take advantage.
  • How do you feel about the calls to wipe out student debt for all Americans? What kind of impact does student loan debt have on the U.S. economy?
