GLENDALE (CNS) - The Glendale Community College Board of Trustees voted to require that all students, faculty and staff be fully vaccinated by the end of October.
On Tuesday, the Board approved a measure requiring everyone who will access district facilities -- including the Verdugo, Garfield and Montrose campuses -- be fully vaccinated by Oct. 31.
The Board voted in response to the rise in the COVID-19 Delta variant in Los Angeles County. The L.A. County Department of Public Health reported a rise of 92% of hospitalizations for unvaccinated individuals, while those vaccinated are 14 times less likely to be hospitalized.
“As we begin to bring back in-person classes for the fall semester, we have a responsibility to provide a safe learning environment for our students and staff at GCC,'' Board President Dr. Armine Hacopian said. “This new rule will contribute to a safer community while allowing our students to pursue their educational goals in a way that aligns with their individual needs.''
The mandate begins in 10 weeks to allow unvaccinated people time to receive both doses. Students and employees may apply for vaccination exemption due to religious or ADA-qualifying physical and mental disabilities, but will need to provide proof of a negative COVID test every week.
“We have online classes for those who prefer learning at home or those who choose not to get vaccinated,'' said Superintendent/President Dr. David Viar. “Students who get the shot are rewarded with the option of coming on campus to learn and engage in person.''
GCC will offer more than 200 in-person classes and 1,500 online classes this fall. Everyone on campus must wear a mask regardless of vaccination status.
Additional information can be found at glendale.edu, and unvaccinated students can make an appointment for their first shot at myturn.ca.gov.
