SANTA MONICA (CNS) - A man died today in a multi-vehicle crash on the Santa Monica (10) Freeway in Santa Monica.
The crash on the eastbound 10 outside the McClure Tunnel at the Lincoln Boulevard overpass was reported at 5:46 p.m., according to California Highway Patrol Officer Elizabeth Kravig and Santa Monica Fire Department Capt. Patrick Nulty.
Firefighters found nine vehicles involved in the crash, Nulty said. One was overturned. Two people were hospitalized and one man died at the scene. One man was critically injured. One person was treated at the scene and then released.
The deceased man's name was withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The CHP issued a SigAlert and all eastbound lanes were temporarily blocked at the accident site for the death and crash investigations. There was no word yet on when they will be reopened.
A total of 27 firefighters were sent to the scene, along with Santa Monica police and CHP units.
The freeway lanes were reopened and SigAlert canceled around 10:10 p.m., the CHP reported.
The cause of the crash was being investigated by the CHP.
