While the news that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has resigned over a sexual misconduct scandal might have surprised the rest of the country, for New York residents his shameful departure was old hat... In fact, it's been 15 years since a New York governor has left office without being forced by a scandal.
After Republican George Pataki left office in 2006, he was succeeded by former Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, who resigned just two years into his term amid accusations of his involvement with a top-dollar prostitution ring. He was then replaced by former Lieutenant Governor David Paterson, who ended his reelection campaign after he was accused of illegally intervening in an aide's domestic violence case.
Cuomo, another former attorney general, announced his resignation on Tuesday after an investigation supported the accounts of 11 women who have accused him of sexual misconduct.
Prosecutors are reportedly deciding whether to file criminal charges.
