EL SEGUNDO (CNS) - A safety flare at the Chevron El Segundo refinery was visible early today as workers worked to resolve an equipment malfunction that required the pressure release.

The flare started about 8 p.m. after a malfunction in a processing unit at the refinery at 324 W. El Segundo Blvd., Chevron spokesman Jeff Wilson told City News Service.

“The safety flare operated as intended,'' Wilson said. It was on and off intermittently as needed and a monitoring system around the plant made sure emissions did not exceed thresholds set by the South Coast Air Quality Management District, he said.

“There is no safety issue,'' Wilson said.
