SANTA MONICA (CNS) - Authorities today suspended the search in the water near the Santa Monica Pier for a woman originally reported clinging to pilings.

A passerby informed lifeguards about 8:45 p.m. Sunday about a woman in the water, Los Angeles County Fire Department Dispatch Supervisor Michael Pittman told City News Service.

Searchers began looking for her, including divers and personnel from Los Angeles County Lifeguards and Harbor Patrol and the U.S. Coast Guard, but some of the efforts were discontinued about 11:30 p.m.

After daybreak Monday, divers resumed the search efforts, according to the county fire department. However, shortly after 9 a.m., the county fire Lifeguards Division reported that the search was suspended.

“Land-based lifeguard units and lifeguard rescue boats will continue periodic patrols,'' the Lifeguards Division tweeted.

The Coast Guard asked anyone with information to call 310-521-3815.
