LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The M. Night Shyamalan thriller ``Old'' took in $16.5 million at the box office this weekend to lead all films, according to industry estimates released today.
It was good news and bad news for Shyamalan: ``Old'' marks the seventh time one of his films has opened at No. 1, but it's also the worst opening of the director's career, below the $18 million grossed by 2006's ``Lady in the Water.'' Some of that drop-off can likely be attributed to the coronavirus pandemic and its overall effect at the box office.
``Snake Eyes'' -- an origin story for the G.I. Joe superhero character -- opened in second place with $13.3 million, Comscore reported. Marvel's ``Black Widow'' was third with $11.6 million in its third week of release, followed by ``Space Jam,'' starring Lakers forward LeBron James and a cast of animated characters, which made just $9.5 million one week after opening with $31.6 million.
``Old'' and ``Snake Eyes'' are playing exclusively in theaters, while ``Space Jam'' and ``Black Widow'' are both available on streaming services. ``F9'' was in fifth place with $4.7 million Friday through Sunday at theaters in the United States and Canada, adding to its impressive domestic total of $163 million. ``F9'' has made $621 million worldwide.
Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases, as estimated by Comscore, were ``Escape Room: Tournament of Champions'' ($3.4 million), ``The Boss Baby 2: Family Business'' ($2.7 million), ``The Forever Purge'' ($2.3 million), ``A Quiet Place Part II'' ($1.25 million) and ``Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain'' ($830,000).
