As of Tuesday afternoon, the average price of a gallon of regular gas was $4.33, marking the highest it's reached since October 2012, the AAA reports. The new price reflects a whopping $1 increase since the beginning of the year, according to the agency.

Part of the reason for the hike is a new law that increases tax on gasoline by six-tenths of a cent per gallon, officials say. That brings the state's total gas excise tax to 51.1 cents per gallon, the highest in the United States, per the AAA.
