LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The Los Angeles Police Department today announced the launch of an adult diversion program that will place individuals arrested for certain crimes in support programs in lieu of other legal consequences.
The LAPD, in cooperation with the Alternatives to Incarceration Office, established the ATI Pre-File Diversion Program on Monday, according to a police statement.
The program will direct people arrested for “select misdemeanors and non-violent felonies'' to community support programs instead of facing harsher penalties, such as criminal charges, prosecution and jail time. The program is intended to reduce recidivism and enhance public safety, the LAPD said in a statement.
The LAPD 77th Street Community Police Station jail will be the first to implement the program, and the LAPD Metropolitan Detention Center and the LAPD Van Nuys Station jail also are soon expected to use the program.
