Jail Inmate Found Dead in OC Jail Cell in Apparent Suicide

SANTA ANA (CNS) - A 32-year-old inmate facing attempted murder and domestic violence charges apparently took his own life while in custody this past weekend, sheriff's officials announced today.

Robert R. Martin, who was booked into jail on May 20 by Costa Mesa police, was found dead in his cell in the Intake Release Center in Santa Ana about 7 p.m. Sunday, according to Carrie Braun of the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

Martin was due in court June 9 to be arraigned on felony charges of attempted murder, corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant, assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury and false imprisonment, along with a misdemeanor count of child abuse and endangerment, according to court records.

Martin was on probation at the time of his arrest. He pleaded guilty March 10 to a misdemeanor count of grossly negligent discharge of a firearm.

The Orange County District Attorney's Office will investigate the in-custody death, which is routine.
