Gelding Euthanized at Santa Anita After Fracturing Ankle

ARCADIA (CNS) - A 4-year-old gelding was euthanized after fracturing his right front ankle in a race at Santa Anita Park, the track announced.

Agamemnon was triaged on the turf course by track veterinarians and a diagnostic examination determined that it was an unrecoverable injury, according to Santa Anita.

In Monday's third race, Agamemnon was fourth at the start of the six-furlong allowance race, dropped to sixth in the field of eight a quarter-mile into the race, seventh a half-mile into the race and eighth at the start of the stretch.

Agamemnon is the ninth horse to die from a racing or training injury during Santa Anita's winter/spring meeting. The death was the first at the track since Multiplier was euthanized April 18 after breaking an ankle.

Agamemnon won for the second time in his previous start, an allowance optional claiming race April 25 at Santa Anita. Agamemnon won in his debut, May 31, 2020, at Santa Anita and had a second-place finish in his eight starts. His career earnings were $71,300.
