PALMDALE (CNS) - A man died today in a three-vehicle crash in the Palmdale area that left five other people injured.
The collision occurred about 3:50 a.m. on 50th Street East north of Avenue P, the California Highway Patrol reported.
According to the CHP, a 1998 Chevrolet Suburban was southbound on 50th Street East when it collided with a northbound 2020 Chevrolet Malibu on the same street.
The driver of the Suburban, “for reasons still under investigation,'' veered left into the northbound lanes, where it sideswiped the Malibu, the CHP reported.
The Malibu then collided with a southbound Toyota Yaris, the CHP reported.
A 66-year-old Palmdale man riding in the front passenger seat of the Malibu died at the scene, the CHP reported. Authorities withheld his name, pending notification of his relatives.
The driver of the Malibu, 68-year-old Lurlene Smith of Palmdale, and her two other passengers were taken to a hospital for treatment of major injuries, the CHP reported.
The driver of the Suburban, 52-year-old Michael Reinert of Lancaster, was taken to a hospital for treatment of moderate injuries. He was not arrested, the CHP reported.
The driver of the Yaris, 32-year-old Richard Gomez of Lancaster, was taken to a hospital for treatment of major injuries, the CHP reported.
“The involvement of alcohol and/or drugs is not suspected at this time and is still under investigation,'' the CHP reported.
