HOLLYWOOD (CNS) - Nominations are now being accepted for the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and for the first time in nearly four decades, there's a new category available to increase the pool of potential honorees.
According to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which oversees the famed walk, a “sports entertainment'' category has been added. The chamber notes that some sports figures have already been honored on the walk in other categories, but the new category will open nominations to individual sports entertainers “who have made significant contributions to the world of entertainment.''
The category is only open in individuals, not teams or sports-affiliated groups, according to the chamber.
Sports entertainment joins the other Walk of Fame categories – motion pictures, television, radio, recording and live theater/live performance. It's the first time since 1984 that a new category has been added.
“The evolution of the sports entertainment market, which now accounts for a major segment of the overall entertainment industry landscape, makes it a perfect fit for recognition on the Hollywood Walk of Fame,'' Chamber President/CEO Rana Ghadban said. “We feel that sports entertainers deserve the spotlight on the sidewalk and we're certain that this decision will be very well received by their fans.''
Criteria for receiving a Walk of Fame star in all categories include “professional achievement, longevity of five or more years in the nominee's category, and contributions to the community.''
Nominations can be submitted through noon May 28. Nominations can be submitted by anyone, including fans, however, the celebrity must consent in writing to the application being filed.
According to Ana Martinez, producer of the Walk of Fame, an average of 200 nominations are received every year. A Walk of Fame Committee then sifts through the nominations and selects honorees. People chosen to receive a star then have two years to confirm a ceremony date.
The sponsor of the star is also responsible for footing the $50,000 cost of installing it.
