Pomona Police Rescue 1-Year-Old Girl from Father

POMONA (CNS) - A 34-year-old Pomona man was arrested today after he allegedly assaulted his wife, then holed up in his home with his 1-year-old daughter.

Police were called just before 1 p.m. to a domestic disturbance at a residence in the 700 block of East Holt Avenue, said Pomona police Lt. Ryan Rodriguez.

The man's wife showed officers a video she recorded on her cell phone.

“The video showed the suspect laying on the bed holding his daughter haphazardly. The child looked distressed and was crying,'' Rodriguez said.

“Next to the suspect on the bed was what appeared to be an assault rifle. The suspect looked to be either intoxicated or under the influence of narcotics.''

Crisis negotiators tried to talk the man into surrendering, and he came out several times with the toddler in his hands but refused to surrender, the lieutenant said.

“With the suspect growing more agitated, officers feared for the safety of the child,'' he said. Officers zip-tied a gate in the open position which the suspect had been using to go in and out.

“When he came out and tried to close the gate, he hesitated for a moment when the gate did close. Officers seized this opportunity to move in and safely rescue the child, and take the suspect into custody without injuries to anyone,'' Rodriguez said.

Officers recovered a replica assault rifle, he said.

The man was arrested for suspicion of domestic violence and child endangerment and booked into the Pomona city jail, Rodriguez said. His name was not immediately released.
