ARCADIA (CNS) - A 5-year-old gelding died after fracturing an ankle during a race at Santa Anita Park, officials confirmed.
Mantra “pulled up in distress'' during Sunday's ninth race, Santa Anita said. The horse crossed the wire, finishing last, then was vanned off and later euthanized with a fractured right front ankle.
Mantra was owned by J&G Stables LLC and Nicholas Vaccarezza, and trained by Carlo Vaccarezza. His jockey on Sunday was Alexis Centeno.
Mantra had 24 races in his career, with two first-place finishes.
He is the sixth horse to die during Santa Anita's winter/spring meeting.
The track is preparing to welcome fans back to the stands on April 2 after being closed to the public for a little more than a year because of the coronavirus pandemic.
