LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A second Project Homekey site opened in Los Angeles City Council District 6 and will provide housing for 59 previously unsheltered Angelenos, Council President Nury Martinez announced today.
“Today we begin to provide the keys and welcome unhoused Angelenos to their new homes,'' Martinez said. “Our first Project Homekey site was for families, this site is for individuals, and one of our sites this summer will be for seniors because we recognize that our homeless crisis cannot be solved with a one-size-fits-all approach.''
The city purchased Sepulveda Villa, located in the North Hills area, in October 2020 through federal CARES Act funding, from which the City Council dedicated $200 million to use for the homelessness crisis.
Volunteers of America Los Angeles will operate the site and provide support services, including case management, to help residents fully transition into permanent supportive housing.
“VOALA feels fortunate to fulfill our mission of serving those in need,'' said Veronica Lara, chief operating officer of VOALA. “We look forward to working with the community and Council District staff to serve the homeless population.''
The site will initially have 30 beds and in three months it will be upgraded to accommodate all 59 residents. Of the initial 30 residents, 188 will be moved in from other interim housing sites, and the other 12 will be available to people in Council District 6 who have been contacted by VOALA, the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority and Martinez' office.
The district's first Project Homekey site opened at Parthenia Place in December. Two more sites are projected to open in the district over the summer.
