Traffic Stop Reveals Loaded Rifle, Narcotics

A routine traffic stop of a vehicle occupied by a convicted felon turned up a loaded rifle, a scale, packaging materials and a ``moderate amount of narcotics,'' Pomona police said today.

Officers spotted a vehicle at about 8:15 p.m. Saturday in the area of Mayfair Avenue and Bolivar Street that had illegal window tint and an obstructed front windshield, the Pomona Police Department reported.  ``Prior to the car coming to a stop, a handgun was thrown from the passenger's side,'' according to a police statement. ``Officers were able to contact the two occupants and learned the passenger was a convicted felon currently on probation.''

Officers searched the car and found a loaded rifle, a ``moderate amount of narcotics,'' a scale and packaging materials, suggesting that the items were being used for illegal drug sales, police said.

Jonathan Gonzalez, 21, a documented gang member from Ontario, was arrested on suspicion of several charges that included possession of a loaded/unregistered firearm, possession of a firearm and controlled substance as well as being a gang member in possession of a loaded firearm.

Gonzalez was arrested without incident and booked at the Pomona city jail. Pomona police urged anyone with information regarding this incident to call them at 909-620-2085.
