Filing Period Ends Today for State Senate Special Election

LOS ANGELES (CNS) -  The filing period ends today for the March 2 special election to fill the state Senate seat vacated by Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly Mitchell.

Assemblywoman Sydney Kamlager has completed the filing process as have two fellow Democrats, Culver City Councilman Daniel Lee and Cheryl C. Turner, president of the Apartment Association of Greater Los Angeles.

Business consultant Tiffani Jones is the lone Republican to complete the process. Community organizer Ernesto Alexander Huerta of the Peace and Freedom Party has also filed as has entrepreneur Renita Duncan, who did not list a party preference.

Republicans Ron Bassilian and Joe Lisuzzo have been issued papers to run, but have not filed.

The list of candidates who have qualified for the ballot is expected to be announced Friday.

The overwhelmingly Democratic 30th Senate District includes Culver City, Mar Vista, Century City, Ladera Heights, Exposition Park, South Los Angeles, Westmont, much of downtown Los Angeles and a portion of Inglewood.

If no candidate receives a majority, a runoff between the top two finishers will be held May 4.

Kamlager, D-Baldwin Hills, announced her candidacy in November and has been endorsed by Mitchell. Kamlager was Mitchell's district director before being elected to represent the 54th Assembly District in a 2018 special election. The 54th Assembly District covers 53.6% of the 30th Senate District, according to the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk.

Lee describes himself as “a true progressive who believes in a just transition bringing accountability to the table'' and “doesn't take money from polluters, police or developers.''
