Felon Charged with Costa Mesa Attack that Leaves Victim Comatose

SANTA ANA (CNS) - An attempted murder charge was filed today against a 35-year-old convicted felon accused of attacking a man in Costa Mesa with a metal rod and chain, leaving the victim comatose.

Adan Diaz was additionally charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, three counts of resisting police and one count each of  burglary and battery on a police officer, all felonies, as well as a misdemeanor battery count. The criminal complaint includes sentencing enhancement allegations of causing great bodily injury to the victim and personal use of a deadly weapon.

Diaz is accused of attacking the victim Monday and resisting three police officers, including one who was injured, according to court records.

Police and prosecutors did not immediately respond to requests for additional details.

Diaz pleaded guilty in April 2015 to assault with a deadly weapon and dissuading a witness from reporting a crime, both felonies, and a misdemeanor count of resisting police. He was sentenced to five years in prison for the Jan. 23, 2014, attack.
