LAPD Commission Tightening Up on Search Policy

The L.A. Police Commission unanimously approved a new policy this week requiring its officers to take an additional step prior to conducting searches.

The new policy still allows officers to move forward with "consent searches", but must now provide proof of such permission - either written or bodycam video capture.

The new policy also states officers should make it understood why the search request is being made.

The purpose of the new policy is to address recent criticism from the community that too many searches are being conducted without consent or justification.
