LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Former Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda, 93, remained hospitalized today in Orange County.
Lasorda “was admitted and he is in intensive care, resting comfortably,'' the Dodgers tweeted. “The family appreciates everyone's thoughts and prayers; however, they request their privacy at this time.''
TMZ Sports reported Lasorda was hospitalized a week ago with heart issues and was on a ventilator and sedated after his condition worsened for a time but that it seemed he'd improved.
A Hall of Famer since 1997, who led the Dodgers to two World Series championships and two World Series losses during his 20-year managerial career, Lasorda attended the team's title-clinching victory in Game 6 of this year's World Series in Arlington, Texas, against the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Fullerton resident has been with the Dodgers organization for more than 70 years as a player, scout, manager and front office executive. He was originally signed by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1945, before reaching the big leagues as a pitcher with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1954.
He managed the Dodgers from 1976-96, and is currently special advisor to the chairman.
Local leaders took to social media to wish Lasorda well.
“Sending my best wishes to Dodgers legend Tommy Lasorda and joining fans and Angelenos all across our city in wishing him a quick recovery,'' Mayor Eric Garcetti tweeted.
City Attorney Mike Feuer also weighed in, tweeting: “All of us in the City Attorney's office are thinking of the iconic Tommy Lasorda this morning and sending our thoughts to him and his family.''
