LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A heat advisory will be in effect in much of the Southland today as forecasters warned the region's latest heat wave poses a threat to human health.
The advisory will be in effect from 11 a.m. today until 5 p.m. Friday along the L.A. County coast, in Malibu, Santa Monica and other beach cities, in metropolitan Los Angeles, the Hollywood Hills, the San Gabriel and Santa Monica mountains, the San Fernando, Santa Clarita and San Gabriel valleys, and inland Orange County.
“Hot temperatures may cause heat illnesses to occur,'' warned an NWS statement. “Those without air conditioning will be especially vulnerable during this extended heat wave. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.''
The NWS stressed that children, seniors and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances, even with windows open as car interiors can quickly turn lethally hot.
Sunny skies were forecast in L.A. County, along with highs of 82 degrees in Avalon; 84 at LAX; 92 in Long Beach and Downtown L.A.; 94 in Palmdale and Lancaster; 95 in San Gabriel; 96 in Burbank; 98 in Pasadena; and 101 in Woodland Hills. A cooling trend will get underway Saturday, and by Monday Several communities will find themselves in the 70s and 80s.
The NWS also forecast sunny skies in Orange County today and highs of 80 on Santiago Peak; 85 in Newport Beach; 86 in San Clemente; 88 in Laguna Beach; 90 on Ortega Highway at 2,600 feet; 94 at Fremont Canyon; 96 in Yorba Linda; 97 at Trabuco Canyon; and 98 in Fullerton, Anaheim, Irvine and Mission Viejo. A relatively rapid cooldown will begin Saturday, and by Monday, communities forecast to reach the high 90s today will be in the low 80s.
