LAKE HUGHES (CNS) - Firefighters moved closer this morning to full containment of a wildfire that has blackened 31,089 acres since it broke out near Lake Hughes on Aug. 12.

The Lake Fire, which is 95% contained, has destroyed 12 structures and 21 outbuildings and damaged six others since it erupted near Lake Hughes Road and Pine Canyon Road in the Angeles National Forest, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

Firefighters are monitoring the flames, which are burning in 100-year-old fuels consisting of Big Cone Douglas Fir, Oak and Gray Pine, and working to eliminate any hot spots and guard against any threat of spread, the Forest Service said.

A dangerous and potentially deadly heat wave is forecast for the holiday weekend, with the hottest temperatures expected on Saturday and Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

“The very hot conditions (today) through Labor Day will bring an increased threat of large fire activity including fires with large vertical growth,'' the NWS tweeted Thursday evening.

ANF fire crews have been battling the blaze with the Los Angeles County Fire Department and assistance from other agencies including the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and the California Highway Patrol.

Four firefighters were injured battling the blaze, but details were not released.

Full containment of the fire is expected Sept. 12.

The cause of the Lake Fire remains under investigation.
