LA Sheriff's Deputies Fatally Shoot a Black Man They Claim Had a Gun

Los Angeles Sheriff's Deputies fatally shot a man who they claim punched a deputy and had a gun on him in South Los Angeles.

Officials say the man was riding a bicycle Monday afternoon when two deputies tried to stop him for being in violation of vehicle laws.

Lt. Brandon Dean of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department says that is when the man ran off.

"Our suspect was holding some items of clothing in his hands, punched one of the officers in the face, and then dropped the items in his hands. The deputies noticed that inside the clothing items he dropped was a black semiautomatic handgun, at which time a deputy-involved shooting occurred."

The man was hit several times by both deputies and the officers say they recovered the handgun he was holding.

Black Lives Matter protesters gathered overnight near the scene.
