ARLETA (CNS) - A pedestrian on the northbound Golden State (5) Freeway in Arleta was fatally struck today by a sheriff's department inmate-transport bus and at least one other vehicle.

The unidentified man was struck at 3:20 a.m. on the northbound 5 Freeway, just south of Osborne Street, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Peter Nicholson.

He was trying to cross the busy roadway and walked into the path of the oncoming bus, according to the CHP. After being hit by the bus, he fell into the roadway and was struck by at least one other vehicle.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, and it was unclear why he was walking on the freeway.

The bus didn't have any inmates aboard at the time, Nicholson said. The driver was not injured.

Anyone with information about the man was asked to contact CHP officer L. Nash of the CHP's Altadena office at 626-296-8100.
