A Chinese graduate student was caught destroying evidence, after being suspected of possible visa fraud, and transmitting "sensitive software, and technical data," to Chinese military, according to an FBI affidavit. Guan Lei has been charged with destroying evidence, after authorities witnessed Lei attempting to discard a hard drive, just days after being questioned by investigators, and trying to fly back to China.
Guan Lei had been working at UCLA trying to develop an algorithm that would apply to machine learning, information he was trying to share with Chinese military. There have been 3 other incidents, recently, that have led to the arrest of visiting scientists from China.
