Operation Originally Thought to Be Meth Lab Was Not

LAKE FOREST (CNS) - Orange County sheriff's deputies serving a warrant at a Lake Forest home in connection with stolen property discovered what they thought might be a methamphetamine lab and evacuated surrounding residences, authorities said today.

But upon closer examination, it was determined the operation utilized acid to harvest gold plating from the circuit boards of electronics, said Orange County sheriff's Lt. Aaron Brady.

“It is still a hazardous materials situation, but not drug-related,'' Brady said. “They have a couple of people detained.''

The discovery was made about 11 p.m. Sunday at 24662 Sunset Lane, he said.

Deputies evacuated surrounding residences as a precaution, Brady said. He wasn't sure if the neighbors were back in their homes after a meth lab was ruled out but he expected they would be allowed to return soon.
