Rhode Islanders Receive Tax Refund Checks Signed by... Mickey Mouse?!

At least 175 Rhode Island residents have received tax refund checks... signed by Mickey Mouse and Walt Disney?!

The checks, which began turning up in mailboxes this week, were mailed out after a test file -- which featured the signatures of the fictitious mouse and his creator -- was accidentally swapped for the real one, says Jade Borgeson, chief of staff for the Rhode Island Department of Revenue.

"No other signature lines were printed besides the two," he said.

According to the R.I. Division of Taxation, which works under the Revenue Department, they commonly use "Mickey Mouse" and "Walt Disney" as names on checks for internal testing.

But it's too late to try and deposit one now... The tax division has already voided the checks and will issue new ones, signed by General Treasurer Seth Magaziner and State Controller Peter Keenan instead.

“Corrected checks will be reissued to impacted taxpayers within one week,” Borgeson added.
