SOUTH EL MONTE (CNS) - A man believed to be 60 years old hanged himself from an overpass on the southbound Pomona (60) Freeway in South El Monte tonight, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The man was first spotted on the 60 Freeway at Peck Road about 9:25p.m., the CHP reported.

CHP officers and firefighters responded to the scene but the unidentified man hanged himself shortly after being spotted on the overpass, the CHP Officer Patrick Kimball said. The suicide shut down all southbound lanes at the site, while northbound lanes remained open, Kimball said.

The man's body was removed but it was not immediately clear how long the stoppage would remain in effect.
