A gunman reportedly wearing a FedEx uniform shot and killed the son of a federal judge and wounded her husband at their New Jersey home. Initial reports said that when Daniel Anderl, 20, opened the door, the suspect started shooting. His father, Mark Anderl, was standing behind him and was wounded. U.S. District Court of New Jersey Judge Esther Salas was in the basement at the time and was unharmed in the attack.
There were no reports of threats made against Salas, though she has been involved in high-profile cases. Last week, she was assigned a class-action lawsuit against Deutsche Bank for failing "to properly monitor customers that the Bank itself deemed to be high risk, including, among others, the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein."
She also oversaw the financial fraud case against Real Housewives of New Jersey stars Teresa and Joe Giudice. In 2018, Judge Salas sentenced the leader of the violent South Side Cartel to 45 years in prison after he was convicted on federal racketeering charges.
"Judge Salas and her family are in our thoughts at this time as they cope with this senseless act," New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said in a statement. "This tragedy is our latest reminder that gun violence remains a crisis in our country and that our work to make every community safer isn't done."
The U.S. Marshals and the FBI are assisting with the investigation. It is unknown if the suspect worked for FedEx or if he was just posing as an employee. FedEx said they are cooperating with the investigation.
According to multiple news outlets, the suspected gunman was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at a home in Rockland, New York. The man is reportedly an attorney in New York City. Authorities have not identified the gunman or released any information about why he is a suspect in the case.
